I could be wrong, but I think they used the LEDs themselves as the sensors. I at least know that's possible (the LED junction acts like a PIN photodiode) but I dunno if it's what these guys have done.

I think you're mistaken about the status of 116's discovery. There is no way to synthesize 118 without creating 116, too, in the decay chain. Back in 2000, when I was still a middle school student, I had a project in which we had to make a report on any element of our choosing. I picked Ununoctium and Ununhexium (118 and 116). Two scientists at Berkeley had just reported "discovering" them months earlier. Even though I was 12, I read their journal articles, and even interviewed Victor Ninov, one of the two PIs. I remember how uncomfortable he sounded. Turns out, he falsified the data; the ? particles were never really detected.

There is a theory that at some point they will reach a so called 'island of stability', where the atoms are so heavy they are able to stay together. So far this hasn't been reached, and these elements simply fall apart a split second after they are created.

I don't think so hmoy. I don't know much of the vibrational physics behind music, but this is just a pretty cool example of standing waves (waves which combine to have no amplitude/effect in certain spots). It has to do with the type of material, the length/width of the object, and the frequency of vibrations. One thing you can notice is, as the frequency goes up, the number of "nodes" increases. This is a mathematical result of equations that could be worked out.

Ok...I don't quite understand how vapor in the atmosphere changes to a solid in the shape of a hexagon whereas in a freezer the liquid does not. Is the same chemical process taking place but in the atmosphere the process is done so quickly because of the minute amounts of water needed to be frozen compared to, say a liter of water in the fridge? Also, any clue why a hexagon? Why not an octagon?

If you take it out of the argon seal pouch, it will oxidize. It's good to have a glove box like this one, even though it doesn't have to be that large. Also, they sell ores, doped marbles, and isotopes, but it usually takes along time to arrive. They are a chemical company. A lot of nice stuff they have is usually out of stock...

I have 5 grams of U-238 metal, and some Uranium chemicals, like Pitchblende, (Uranium Dioxide), Ammonium Diuranate, and Triuranium Octoxide... I have them sealed under glass ampoules with low-pressure argon gas, to prevent oxidation... I collect and study radioactive materials. It's fun, just have to be careful...

The implications of this have really and truly nothing to do with the transmission of sound. Yes, sure, it makes a great DJ tool. But think bigger than that, this hints at the technology necessary to "visibly" move an object - in this case sound - from point A to point B and make changes in between those two points. Technology like this could be used in the information management industry, medical sector, and communication sector, with further development.

Well Franklin's work was certainly important for solving the structure of DNA, but this Nobel does not really have much to do with DNA in particular. I would have thought that mentioning either one of the Bragg's or even Pauling would be more relevant to crystallography then Franklin. I mean yes she has done important work, but there are hundreds of people who have done work that is more relevant to the Ribosome who remain completely unnamed.

As to why Windows 95, it uses less system resources, as well as the fact that the technology is old by modern standards[older than 5 years, haha], and the biggest reason of all: Science is always underfunded, noobs D:< But, honestly, I would rather have a machine that works than one that might spontaneously decide that my software is a virus. For instance, my new laptop is Vista and it has tons of issues. My old Packard Bell with Windows 3.1, however, has been running for 18+ years or so.

@dasgemuse The reason that Windows 95/98 is still used in a lot of laboratory equipment is because the equipment was designed more than a decade ago. The device drivers were written for 95/98 and there is no imperative to make the investment to upgrade the drivers to newer versions. As " The Stephenation " said: don't fix it if it works. If the machines were designed today, a newer OS would be used (Windows or Linux)
